The Melbourne International Film Festival kicks off on 25th July with the Michael Moore offering, Sicko, which takes a critical view of the American health service - and sometimes a rather too rosy one of our very own NHS.
Other screenings include Lars von Trier's The Boss of It All, and Once by Irish filmmaker John Carney.
The closing night spot, set for 12th August, has been won by This Is England , from British filmmaker Shane Meadows, which is set against the backdrop of his own childhood during the Falklands War in 1982.
The festival will screen over 300 films, including 9 world premieres. New categories for this year include Africa! Africa!, presenting features and documentaries from the continent; Stars of David, presenting Israeli cinema and Next Gen, aimed at the younger discerning viewer, aged 6-10 and 14+.
The festival will also host a short film compeition, including around 100 entries, all competing for pooled prize money of AUD$35 000.
