European Co-Productions Held in Un Certain Regard

 

Luxury Car - Un Certain RegardEuropean co-production and increasing European involvement in international production appears to have been favoured in the Un Certain Regard awards ceremony at Cannes this year.

 

The Grand Prize, presented by jury president Monte Hellman, went to Luxury Car by China's Wang Chao, in which producer France's Rosem Films had a 50% stake, backed by Arte France Cinéma and sold internationally by Celluloid Dreams.

The Special Jury Prize went to Ten Canoes by Australia's Rolf De Heer, another production in which European film talent is represented. The producer, Fandango Australia, was set up by Italian producer Domenico Procacci. Film sales are handled by Wild Bunch.

Jury President Prize this year went to Murderers by French director Patrick Grandperret, produced by Sylvie Pialat for Les Films du Worso, is also being sold by Wild Bunch.

The Best Actor award was this year shared by an actress and actor. Dorothea Petre for The Way I Spent the Rest of the World by Romania's Catalin Mitulescu, co-produced by French outfit Films Pellés and sold by Pyramide (see article); and Don Angel Tavira for El Violin by Mexican filmmaker Francisco Vargas, being sold by Memento Films.
