Cocaine Cowboys is a documentary looking at the rise of drug gangs in 1980s Florida. It was released in UK cinemas on 23rd November, so should be on near you.
For those unfamilar with the events of the period, the documentary tracks the transformation of Miami from sleepy retirement village to a place made rich through drugs and violent killings.

Key players from the period also perform talking head duties in the film, and their lack of regret is remarkable.
The most surprising thing of all is that the lynchpin of the drugs industry, known as La Madrina [The Godmother], is a woman called Griselda Blanco. She was known for being much crueller than any of the men. In fact, she is to be the subject of the sequel to Cocaine Cowboys, such was her influence upon the period.
It's a fascinating watch, and the use of contemporary figures and footage gives the film authenticity. An enlightening look at how an area can be changed so easily - and so much for the worse - by outside influences.
