UK Goes Ape While US Sinks Corelli
20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes became the second largest UK opener of the year with a USD7.9m take, while Working Title's Captain Corelli's Mandolin opened in the US at a disappointing sixth place with a USD7.2m weekend take.
Like the US, which is heading for a record year at the box office with a total USD8bn take, the UK should break records and pass the USD1bn mark for the first time. Planet of the Apes is Fox's third biggest UKL opener after Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace and Independence Day. The weekend was up 32% on last year when Fox's X-Men was released.
