Short Film Factory Hunts This Year's Talent

The Team at Short Film Factory are on the look out for this year’s new talent. They want IDEAS for short films with a running time of up to 8.5 minutes. Applicants don’t need any experience of filmmaking and the scheme is open to both new and experienced filmmakers.

Ideas should simply be put on one page of A4 and sent in with the application form available on the website www.eightandahalf.com by 5th October 2001. The Short Film Factory are also on the lookout looking for directors and producers to add to their database, CV’s and showreels are welcome for that as well.

A spokesman for the company explains; "Across the world screenwriters and filmmakers begin their careers with short films. They struggle against the odds with no budgets, persuading crews and artistes almost always to work for very little or no money as they desperately try to get their first films made. At Short Film Factory we genuinely give opportunities to enable this new talent to get scripts written and offer the chance to make their first films."

Scotland’s top actor/director Peter Mullan is Patron of the scheme and it hasn’t taken long for the company to be recognised as having one of the most innovative, groundbreaking short film programmes in the UK today. The four films that are finally selected to be carried forward into production are certain of broad exposure, not only in cinemas, but they will be broadcast by BBC Scotland and BBC Choice.

Last year the Short Film Factory was inundated with ideas from across Scotland. A panel of experienced filmmakers read, deliberated, debated and finally had the difficult task of choosing twelve ideas to develop to script.

At this point teams were put together for a ten-week training programme under the guidance of top professional mentors. The four final scripts (all from first time writers and directors) were invited to The Short Film Lab. This residential film lab involved rigorous script development for writers as well as intense director & producer training. The four successful teams are presently completing their first films. These will be screened at a BAFTA/Short Film Factory Event in October and launched at The Brief Encounters Film Festival in Bristol in November. The films are to be broadcast by BBC Scotland and BBC Choice.

The company describes short films as the backbone of filmmaking careers for writers, directors and producers and is proud of its unique approach to the genre; "We are the only company in Britain where new talent is offered a tailored programme of specialist writing workshops, professional guidance and inspirational script development prior to funding films."

The company likes to help steer projects from the earliest stage, before a script exists.

"At Short Film Factory we ask only for ideas. These ideas are read blind by experienced film-makers and script editors. There is no bias. Take a Risk. Send us your idea. Yours could be the one that is selected. That’s the truth."
