Snowball Oranges Snowballs

A FILM based on the experiences of a Lothian writer abroad could soon be made by Hollywood star Michael Douglas, it emerged today.

Peter Kerr, a former farmer from Haddington, shot to fame last year after his debut novel Snowball Oranges - the true story of his familyŠs failed attempt to run a Spanish orange farm on the island of Mallorca- received glowing praise from critics.

The book was compared to the classic A Year in Provence and shot to number two in Amazon.comŠs bestseller list last year.

Now the authorŠs follow-up tale, Manana Manana, has attracted interest from a well-known reader in the United States.

Mr Kerr revealed he recently received a letter from acclaimed actor Michael Douglas heaping praise on his first book and requesting a copy of the second, saying he would like to examine the "cinematic possibilities".

Mr Kerr added: "IŠm not holding my breath but it is really good to get a letter from somebody like that. He has an estate in Mallorca, which is probably where he got a copy, but to send a letter to let me know how much he enjoyed the book was great."

Manana Manana is launched today and Peter Kerr will spend the next few weeks travelling around Britain to sign copies of the follow-up book, including a visit to prestigious London store Harrods.

The second story follows the Kerr familyŠs progress on the fruit farm, with incidents involving the local police, a drinking session and the embarrassing subtleties of the language.
