A BBC move promoting executive producer Anne Mensah to oversee drama production in Scotland is the latest step to boost drama in the nations and Regions following a pledge from Director of Television Jana Bennett two months ago.
Mensah is currently at BBC Drama North and her credits include Bodies and Sweeney Todd. She will head up drama production from Scotland, both for network and local audiences.
Bennett pledged to increase network production in the nations by 50% over the next seven years. She also said the corporation plans to spend half its drama budget outside London by 2012.
Wales has already scored major drama successes with series such as Casanova and Doctor Who. Scotland is now pushing harder into the genre as well as specialising in entertainment, arts, factual and children's output.
Mensah is expected to start her new role in late February. She will work with both in-house and independent producers to develop ideas.
Mensah started at the BBC in 2001, when she worked as head of development for London independent drama, before moving to Manchester to support drama development in the north of England.
