Funding and Support

First Take

In partnership with Anglia Television, First Take is a showcase of short films from new talent commissioned annually for production and broadcast in the Anglia Television region in a late evening slot. The scheme comprises of three strands to encourage innovation and experimentation from a broad range of creative experience:

'Storyville' Filmmakers with previous experience of either drama or documentary production can produce 10 minute or 17/18 minute dramas. First Take look for contemporary tales with a strong, urgent narrative. While films can be produced on any format there is particular interest to commission work on DV that is made specifically for television rather than a cinema release.

'Right Here Right Now' Both new and more established filmmakers are commissioned to produce ten minute documentaries which vividly reflect issues and concerns of contemporary life.

'Arthouse' Arthouse is a new strand that will accept animation, mixed media and innovative work which explores new narrative structures. Work must be between one and six minutes and produced on any broadcast-quality format. Students and artists working outside of television are encouraged to apply.

East of England Regional Production Fund

The production fund provides initial financial support for the realisation, development and production of moving image projects within the region. Resources are concentrated on three areas - script reading and development services, development bursaries and production development awards. A wide range of genres, styles and formats are accepted.

New Voices

New Voices is a new documentary series aimed at new filmmakers and produced for Anglia Television. New directors are 'hot housed' by First Take and will be trained in key areas of production such as camera, sound, editing and working within a professional broadcast environment.

It is likely that directors will both direct and shoot their own footage or work with a small crew. First Take Films will provide an editor and all production and post production facilities and a small budget which will include a fee paid to the director on completion of the film.

Projects that can make good use of a late schedule, are energetic and engaging, embrace new ways of making films and all areas and subject matters are encouraged. Completed programmes will be shown in an 11.30pm slot by Anglia Television and should therefore fit an ITV half-hour slot of 23 minutes.

Write Lines

Writelines offers writers the opportunity to have a detailed script report written by an experienced film or television professionals. Advice is given on how to further develop a project and if a script has potential, on funding and production possibilities.

Scripts should be for film, television, radio or video and can be of any length or genre including fiction, documentary, experimental and animation. Writelines charge a fee of £15 per script (shorts) and £30 per script (feature length)

Master Classes and Short Courses

Panel discussions are frequently arranged with industry guests, including independent producers and executives from the broadcasters. Short courses including topics on Production Management, Directing for Actors and Script Writing are also organised. Details of forthcoming events can be found on the web site.
