Overview

Cineworks is a short film scheme operated by the Glasgow Media Access Centre in partnership with the Film and Video Access Centre in Edinburgh. With backing from Scottish Screen's short film awards scheme the initiative commissions five original and innovative films from Scottish filmmakers producing drama, documentary or animation.

Funding and Support

Individuals or Writer/ producer/ director teams can submit projects for completion awards of £5,000 or production awards of £10,000 or £15,000. About 10% of each award is in kind support from the Glasgow Media Access Centre, the Film and Video Access Centre in Edinburgh, GHS, post production company Soho Images and Kodak. Further funds can be brought in, which has previously come from the Glasgow Film Office, the London Film and Video Development Agency, Enterprise Ayrshire and Border's Council.

Productions are considered by a panel of filmmakers and funders based on the quality of ideas, track records, the feasibility of a project's budget and distribution potential. Filmmakers with more than one broadcast credit or a previous Cineworks award in the role in which they are submitting a project are ineligible for the scheme. Where an individual writer submits a project assistance will be given to find directing and producing talent to join the project. Directors, producers and animators may contact the scheme without a project in order to be considered for projects not submitted by a full team.

Films must be a maximum of 10 minutes in length and completed on 35mm, although they may be originated on either digital video, 16mm or super 16mm. Twelve projects are initially short listed by the panel and developed over a two months period with the support of story editors and industry professionals. On resubmission to the selection panel five projects are commissioned for production. The UK premiere of the films takes place at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and Scottish Screen undertakes distribution to 20 festivals and markets as part of a two year strategy. The films will be toured to cinemas across the UK and where possible they will be attached to features. They may also be broadcast on TV and the Internet.
