bfiThe BFI have announced February 1st 2007 as the date for opening the new BFI Southbank centre, the reincarnation of the National Film Theatre.

As well as the existing three cinemas, the space will include a Mediatheque for archive material, a drop in studio cinema, an visual art studio space,  and the long awaited return of the bookshop.

In addition to the existing three cinemas showcasing the best historical and contemporary film from around the world, we're transforming the rest of the site to create a number of exciting new spaces, resources, services and FREE activities.

Three Cinemas

The three cinemas will continue to screen historic and artistically significant work from around the world as well as previews, special releases and work made for television.

Studio cinema

BFI South Bank: Chaplin Studio

A drop-in digital cinema showcasing archive and contemporary film, video and television material as well as hosting talks, presentations and education events.

Mediatheque

"The Great British Film and Television Show."

The very latest way for individuals or small groups to browse a huge selection of titles from the BFI's National Archive for free. From fragile film treasures to contemporary television, digitisation will allow anyone to enjoy rarely seen footage.

In the first year there will be a number of curated programmes including Essentially British, Black Britain and London Calling.

Gallery

The debut exhibition will feature the New York based artists Jennifer and Kevin McCoy whose work mix sculpture and live video, drawing on surrealist influences to suggest previously unimagined possibilities in cinema.

Project Space

A casual research, study and participation area equipped with a number of unique resources, largely drawn from the BFI’s collections. A series of innovative education projects will be on offer, engaging local film-makers and young people.

Filmstore

A shop stocked and staffed by BFI experts. Offering an extensive range of film and television books and DVDs.

New bar & cafe

In addition to the river front café, a new relaxing and comfortable bar complete with Wi-fi access.

New box office and entrance

BFI South Bank: Foyer

A new central point for box office, information and membership services. This will be located in the new foyer, fully accessible from Theatre Avenue (opposite the National Theatre).
