northern lights With no previous film experience, 12 year old Brit Dakota Blue Richards has beaten off 10,000 other hopefuls for the part of Lyra in New Line Cinema's His Dark Materials trilogy. The Cambridge schoogirl got the part after open auditions earlier in the year.

The first film - the Golden Compass (Northern Lights in the UK) - is shortly to go into production with a rumoured budget of $150m. About a Boy and Antz director Chris Wietz is writer-director for the production which has already run into controversy after suggestions that references to God would be removed from the film. In the book, the planned overthrowing of heaven and killing of God and the establishment of a republic of heaven is a central theme. New Line are hoping that the Dark Materials Trilogy will replicate the success they enjoyed with the Lord of the Rings franchise, and fear that religious controversy will limit its box office chances more than would alienating fans of the book.

 Philip Pullman said, "I'm delighted with the casting of Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra. As soon as I saw Dakota's screen test, I realized that the search was over. Dakota has just the combination of qualities that make up the complicated character of this girl, and I very much look forward to seeing the film take shape, with Dakota's Lyra at the heart of it."

New Line have given the greenlight to production on The Golden Compass film and filming will begin September 4th, for a scheduled December 2007 release date.

how is she selfish, would you be all 'oh but i'll be generous i'll let somebody else have the part' if you got it? no. so leave her alone, she's a good Lyra and you should be happy that she got it if she's a good actress.

I wish everyone who didn't get the part would stop being so pathetic about it. If you're acting this immaturely now, you obviously wern't going to get the part. I'm sure Lyra has been well cast, and I have full confidence in Pullman- if he approves of her, then so do I.

if u are her best mate then y are u on a site saying how much people hate her? and if u don't like it get of the site then and if people want to say how much they hate her then let them there just pissed off and did you go to the aditoins cause if not u have no idea how these people feel.
o and no one will belive you know that girl until you have evidence so get some pictures or something then people might stop.
and don't try to rub it in peoples faces.
and i meen that in the kind est way possible and the first addition bit was just luck they didn't ask every one a question any way so it was just luck she got picked they probably just thought her name was interesting.

WHAT? i wrote the last comment, saying how GOOD dakota is! why's my name under the one before saying they dont know y there on the sight? AS WELL as being a good actress, dakota is mature and kind with her feet on the ground and always wishes other best (something you need in show biz) and that probabley why she got the part. Hey I went to the oxford auditions- i have nothing against Dakota (I don't know her by the way)and i think she's real lucky for getting the part of lyra. I know how the other people who went to the auditions feel though, I waited for 6 hours in the rain and all i got was a book mark and a lolly so I think that rather than being jealous of this dakota (is that her real or stage name) we should congratulate her and just look out for more auditions better suited to our personalities. Well done dakota- and everyone else I'm peed off with the casting directors patronising assuption of our hopes. (aka- here's a lollipop and a book mark and that's all we're going to say)

im sorry, but how old are you? picked her because her name was interesting? what are you five years old? These people are ADULTS, that picked her not silly little children like you. So theyve grown up, unlike you and pick people because they are good and stuff. I bet all your friends have pretty names thats why your friends with them, your obviously don't have a brain capacity big enough to realise you pick people based on personality and abilities.
