Written by James MacGregor Friday, 19 May 2006

Ken LoachBritish film-maker Ken Loach will make his next film with FilmFour. Loach will direct the contemporary story With the provisional title  These Times> the film is set in Britain which reignites the leftwing director's longstanding links with FilmFour.

FilmFour will co-finance the film and is planning a multiple platform release for These Times, which will be screened on Channel 4 simultaneously with its UK theatrical release.

The film is to be produced by Loach's long-time collaborator, Rebecca O'Brien, written by Paul Laverty, the writer of Loach's current film release, The Wind That Shakes the Barley. Shooting will start in the autumn on location just outside London and in Scotland.

The project links Sixteen Films with FilmFour after their most recent collaboration on his film about railwaymen, The Navigators, as well as films Bread and Roses, My Name is Joe, Carla's Song, Ladybird Ladybird, Raining Stones and Riff-Raff.

Liza Marshall, commissioning editor for Channel 4, said: "Ken Loach is a film-maker who has never compromised his vision. We hope this new project will be just the kind of urgent, questioning and passionate film Channel 4 is proud to make."

The head of FilmFour, Tessa Ross, said: "Working with Ken Loach is always a privilege and I am delighted he is reuniting with FilmFour again."

Film Four? New Cinema Fund when he's over 30 years in the game? Bleeding Scottish Screen dry to the tune of 2 million quid on films that returned zilch to their investors? Fifteen co-producers on his latest Irish film, freshly and politely panned on Screen International's website yesterday?

I'd love some answers.

To think that a UK channel supports Ken Loach in any possible way is abhorent to most proud citizens. Ken Loach is the kind of Britain loathing director convinced of his own superiority that will change history to suit his own needs. Shame on you channel 4.
