Current TV, the
network that pioneered viewer-created-content (VC²), is celebrating its
forthcoming UK launch by holding a contest to encourage young people to produce short, non-fictional video pieces (pods) sharing relevant and compelling stories documenting their world.
Pods can be submitted to the Current website (www.uk.current.com) where a panel will select their favourites. These
can be shot on video camera or mobile phone, and can focus on one of
three categories: a person, a place, or a thing, but must be
non-fiction.Content can then be uploaded via a simple mechanism at www.uk.current.com
Creators
of the chosen pods will then be able to see their work appear on
Current TV itself, with three grand prize winners also winning lunch
with Current's Chairman, former U.S. Vice President, Al Gore, In
addition, six runners-up will receive a Sony HD video camera, plus the
first ten people to upload their video submissions will win a video
iPod filled with Current programming. The competition marks the first
official call for submissions for Current UK, which goes live on 12th March.
Current
is already causing a storm in the United States as the first network in
history to hand control to its audience via Viewer-Created-Content,
voting for programming content and even viewer-created advertising; the
UK channel will run on the same model, encouraging viewers to submit
their own content. President
of Programming David Neuman commented, "Current is about creating a
global dialogue among young adults. This contest is intended to spark
that dialogue among young and aspiring filmmakers in the UK, allowing
us to capture stories in the voice of our viewers."
All submissions must be uploaded to www.uk.current.com
by April 8, 2007 or mailed to the Current UK office by April, 11, 2007.
Current will select one grand prize winner and two second prize winners
in each category, and will announce all winners by May 15, 2007.
About Current
Current
TV, which launched in the United States on August 1, 2005, is the first
network created by, for and with an 18-34 year-old audience. It has
developed the television industry's leading model of "viewer created
content" (VC2), which comprises roughly one-third of
Current's U.S. broadcast, and allows the audience to submit short-form,
nonfiction video "pods", "viewer created ads" (V-CAMs), and mobile
video. Its award-winning programming ranges from the hottest trends in
technology, fashion, music and videogames, to pressing issues such as
the environment, relationships, parenting, finance, politics and
spirituality. Current will be available on BSkyB in March 2007. For more information, please visit the websites: www.uk.current.com or www.current.tv.
